NEW Compact Tractor at Bruntsfield Links golf Club
Andrew Connor, head greenkeeper at Bruntsfield Links Golf Club in Edinburgh for the past 17 years, has recently purchased an Iseki TG5470 compact tractor from Fairways GM of Kinross, the local Ransomes Jacobsen dealer. Ransomes Jacobsen, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, is one of the leading manufacturers of turf maintenance equipment.

An older Iseki model, a TA530, has provided 10 years sterling service and in Andy’s words has proved to be “a good, strong and reliable workhorse”.  The new machine is bigger, more powerful, more user friendly and will be used some of the time with the Club’s large aerator on the back. At other times it will be used for general duties towing trailers and moving other equipment around the huge acreage in which the course is set.

“We had a demo from Fairways and the team liked the increased lifting capacity, the button controls and the Powershift transmission which makes it very controllable. The cab is roomy and really adds to operator comfort”, he said.

The Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society is the fifth oldest golf club in the world dating back to 1761 when members played on the Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh.
The club moved to the links at Musselburgh in 1874 and to the present course at Davidson Mains in 1898. It is an 18-hole parkland course which has magnificent views to the north over the Firth of Forth, is home to abundance of wildlife and has played host to a number of regional and national amateur events.

NEW Jacobsen FAIRWAY MOWER for
Aberdeen city council Golf Courses
The Parks & Countryside department at Aberdeen City Council have returned to their local Ransomes Jacobsen (a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company) grounds care dealer, Fairways GM, and purchased a Jacobsen 405 fairway mower specifically to help maintain the Hazelhead and Balnagask golf courses.

With a prime responsibility for a wide range of parks and green spaces across the city, Parks & Countryside also have four golfing facilities under their remit at Hazelhead, Balnagask, Kings Links and Auchmill.

Nigel Buchan is the Fleet Manager at Aberdeen City Council and commenting on the new machine said,
“The provision of first-class recreational facilities is high on the Council’s agenda and the purchase of this Fairway 405 demonstrates that commitment. Throughout the summer we become a grass factory and the 405, with its seven cutting cylinders, 4-metre wide cutting width and 4-wheel drive, gives us a machine that can provide a high quality finish to fairways across all of these courses.”

Balnagask Golf Course is a challenging 18-hole coastal course with many hills and situated within a nature conservation area on the small Balnagask headland,  with views over to Aberdeen Harbour It also features an adjacent 9-hole Pitch and Putt course.

The Hazlehead complex offers three courses, two 18-hole and a 9-hole together with a Pitch and Putt course. The No. 1 course was designed by Alistair McKenzie, the golf architect better known for designing Augusta National. The No. 2 course, originally a nine hole course, gained an extension in the early seventies, and was designed by Hugget, Coles and Dyer. The 9-hole Course has wide fairways and a marked absence of rough, making is the perfect starting point for the enthusiastic beginner.

Ransomes Jacobsen supplys ISEKI tractor for stonehaven golf Club
Stonehaven Golf Club’s head greenkeeper, Graham Dawson knows a good tractor when he sees one. That’s why he approached his local Ransomes Jacobsen dealer, Fairways GM of Kinross, when his old machine needed replacing.

Fairways market the Iseki tractor range on behalf of Ransomes Jacobsen and they demonstrated the latest TG5390 machine following Graham’s initial enquiry.

Graham gained his greenkeeping expertise from 11 years at Carnoustie, five years at Royal Aberdeen and six years at Stonehaven Golf Club, the last four as head greenkeeper, so he’s in a good position to appreciate the benefits of this machine.

“The TG5390 is a great compact tractor”, he said, “It has to have the lifting capacity to take our sprayer, top dresser and coring machine and it copes admirably as it can lift over 1200 Kg. Best of all, it‘s a good all round package for the price. We need reliable equipment as we operate with a lean team of just four. The TG really meets our needs and with 39hp it has the power to cope with the hilly nature of the course”

Stonehaven is not a typical coastal course as it sits high on the cliffs overlooking the town. Although it is short, at 5103 yards with a par of 66, it has some of the most dramatic holes on Scotland's east coast. The front nine feature dramatic short holes which are played over deep gullies and along the top of steep cliffs, while the back line is true parkland with lush fairways and superb greens.

Defined rough enhances presentation at Newbattle Golf club
Quality of cut and prodigious output is why Jim Christison, course manager at Newbattle Golf Club, has recently purchased a Jacobsen AR250 from his local Ransomes Jacobsen dealer, Fairways GM.

“It’s a very good machine”, he said, “Quick across the ground at working speed, it produces an excellent finish and its productivity, at around 2.8 hectares per hour, is superb. Also it is competitively priced and the support from Fairways is good. All round, a package that suited our requirements to the letter!”

The 18-hole parkland course is 6025 yards, par 69 and is renowned for the exceptional standard of its greens and fairways. Add to this tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers plus large areas of rough and semi-rough and the course becomes a true test of golf.

“Presentation is important”, Jim added, “and with the AR250 we can produce defined areas of rough adding a pleasing definition to the course. Also, having five individual rotary decks, it follows the contours of the ground very well. We also specified a cab to help keep the wind chill at bay. We replaced the normal steel and glass doors with flexible fabric to reduce the weight to mitigate any compaction issues.”

Jim has a team of four and has been at Newbattle for 14 years, the last 12 months as course manager, having progressed through from first assistant to assistant head greenkeeper prior to his current role.

STRONG SALES FOR ISEKI TRACTORS IN SCOTLAND – THE LATEST AT LENZIE golf Club
Sales of the Iseki tractor range are particularly buoyant in Scotland for Fairways GM, the Ransomes Jacobsen dealer that has depots in Inchinnan, Kinross and Aberdeen.

One of the latest organisations to favour the Iseki brand is Lenzie Golf Club, situated at the east end of Gadloch and just 15 minutes northeast of Glasgow city centre.

Gary Burns is head greenkeeper and he has spent his working life, all 24 years, at the 700-member club having joined straight from school in 1982.

“The TG5390 is an excellent compact tractor, competitively priced and just right for our needs here at Lenzie”, he said. “We had it on demo for a few days, which gave all the staff the chance to put it through its paces. The consensus was that it was undoubtedly the best machine for the job.”

The Iseki TG range was introduced at SALTEX last year with the 5390 and the slightly more powerful 5470. Both feature a new ‘intelligent’ transmission system and a quieter, smoother starting engine.

“We had an Iseki TK538 previously, but the new TG range is another step forward”, Gary added. “We’ll be working it quite hard with our aerator and using it for general towing and mowing duties around the course.”

Golf cars for Westhill Golf Club
George Bruce, the Director of Golf at Westhill Golf Club, situated in an elevated position 8 miles west of Aberdeen, has recently purchased two electric E-Z-GO golf cars from his local dealer Fairways GM.

The club, which boasts over 600 members, opened in 1977 and has proved a popular venue with local golfers and visitors from the rest of the UK and overseas. Its location with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, is one of the main reasons for the introduction of the golf cars.

“Fairways loaned us a buggy last year and we trialled it for a week”, said George. “It proved very popular and was out every day. This convinced me that they could be a viable proposition and that’s why I’ve taken these two on a contract hire basis with a full maintenance contract.

“I’ve got fixed costs so I can keep a keen eye on their profitability and absolutely no hassle with maintenance issues. They provide a further facility for the golfers, especially older members and visitors who can play the course, despite the undulations.”

The golf cars are the E-Z-GO TXT models with the patented Precision Drive System, which has allowed George to specify the Steep Hill option tailoring the performance to the undulating conditions at the Club. The increasing cost of fuel, the storage issues relating to petrol and the noise generated by petrol engines were also factors taken into consideration.

E-Z-GO, a Textron Company, is based in Augusta, Georgia, and manufactures the No. 1 selling golf car in the world. Additionally, E-Z-GO is a leading provider of industrial, turf and utility vehicles across a variety of applications and industries.

E-Z-GO Golf Car Fleet for Letham Grange
The Letham Grange Golf Courses, situated in mature parkland 4 miles north of Arbroath in Tayside, has taken delivery of a fleet of 16 golf cars from E-Z-GO, a Textron company (NYSE: TXT), all equipped with DeltaQ onboard chargers.

The golf cars, purchased from local dealer Fairways GM, are the E-Z-GO TXT models with the patented Precision Drive System and also feature the labour-saving single point battery filling system for ease of maintenance.

Fraser Gemmell, General Manager at Letham Grange commented,
“Since the resort opened in 1987 it has experienced some ups and downs, but under the current management it had gone from strength to strength. We are raising the profile of the Club, enhancing the facilities here and this new fleet is part of that process.

“We want to be seen as one of the region’s premier golfing locations and with two 18-hole courses, set in superb parkland locations, together with the club house in the tastefully refurbished baronial mansion house, we have courses to cater for golfers of all abilities. These buggies will ensure that the more elderly golfers can still enjoy the challenge of our courses.”

The Club have taken the fleet on a three year contract hire lease, which from a management perspective is an ideal arrangement. With a fixed cost they know exactly their outlay, month by month, with no hidden surprises. Recognising the storage issues relating to petrol and the noise generated by petrol engines, they opted for the electric buggies with their smoother and quieter ride with the added benefit of lower operating costs.

Fraser Gemmell concluded saying,
“We are delighted with our decision to go down the electric route. The onboard chargers make for easy management; we can leave them outside in our Buggy Park and simple plug them in for overnight charging. The battery filling system also makes routine checking and maintenance extremely simple. It’s a labour-saving innovation and only requires a quick check; if any cell is low on electrolyte it can be topped up in seconds.”

The Old Course at Letham Grange has gained a reputation as one of the toughest inland courses in Scotland, and with water featuring on most holes and measuring almost 7,000 yards from the back tees, this reputation is justified.

DALZIEL PARK LOOK TO FAIRWAYS FOR GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE PACKAGE
Dalziel Park Golf and Country Club has signed a five year contract hire agreement for course maintenance equipment with local dealer Fairways GM.

The equipment, from the Jacobsen brand, includes a Greens King VI triplex mower and Greens King 522A walk-behinds; a TriKing for tees and surrounds; LF3800 for the fairways and the articulated AR250 five deck rotary mower for semi-rough maintenance. Ancillary equipment includes a Cushman Turf-Truckster; an ST480 utility vehicle, a Turfco WideSpin1530 top dresser and an Iseki TK538 compact tractor.

Dalziel is an 18 hole, par 71 parkland course interspersed with extensive areas of woodland. Originally a 9 hole course it was extended to a full 18 in 2002. Stephen Briody has been Course Manager for the past 2½ years and is proud that the club has substantially increased its membership since he arrived in the job.

“The increase in members is due to two main reasons”, he said. “Firstly, my team have worked hard to improve the condition of the course and secondly, the support of the directors who have invested a significant amount in upgrading the facilities here with a programme of renovation and modernisation.

“The quality of the equipment package from Fairways is a great benefit as it has given us the right machinery to do the job thoroughly. I’ve had previous experience with Jacobsen products and the quality of cut is what impresses me most. I really believe that it discourages disease.”

Aberdeen city council ADD to fleet for new Grounds care season
Aberdeen has a wide range of beautiful and interesting parks and green spaces with the best of these equal to any in the UK. They are a key contributor to the quality of life within the area and that’s why the City Council has returned to local grounds care dealer, Fairways GM, for their latest tranche of equipment.

They have added a further three new Ransomes ride-on triple mowers to their grounds maintenance fleet for the coming season and now have 25 similar machines in use across the City. They will be used to maintain sports pitches, public parks and the esplanades along the beach fronts.

For the wider grassed areas the Parks & Countryside department are using Ransomes hydraulic gang mowers and for the finer turfed areas such as bowling greens and tennis courts they are using a selection of walk-behind mowers, also from the Ransomes brand.

Commenting at the recent handover of the new triples, Fleet Manager Nigel Buchan said, “We are committed users of Ransomes equipment and will always use Best Value as the driver for our purchasing decisions. We keep our fleet as young as possible which gives us the capacity to maintain our grounds maintenance schedule throughout the season. With high profile green spaces within the City such as Duthie Park, Hazelhead Park, Victoria Park, Westburn Park and Seaton Park plus the beachfront areas it is important that they reflect the importance placed by the Council on recreational facilities here.”

Significant investment in new equipment at Lanark Golf Club
Lanark Golf Club is renowned for its smooth fast greens, natural moorland fairways and beautiful scenery. Originally laid out by Tom Morris and later refined by James Braid, Lanark is built on a substrate of glacial sands, providing the unique feeling of tackling a Scottish links course at 600 feet above sea level. Variously described in golfing publications as a hidden gem and a geological marvel, at 6,428 yards from the Championship tees, the par of 70 can be a real test to any golfer, especially when the prevailing wind blows.

The Club has recently invested in new turf maintenance equipment from Fairways GM, Ransomes Jacobsen’s dealer for the region. The new equipment includes the latest Jacobsen fairway mower; an articulated rotary for maintaining the rough and a trailed top dresser.

The LF3800 fairway mower was selected as the preferred machine, following a series of demonstrations by all the leading manufacturers, as it was the top performer according to course manager, Jim Lyons. “It’s powerful, well suited to our undulating course and has an excellent quality of cut and finish”, he said.

Jim saw the Jacobsen AR250 in action at a local course on a very inclement day and was impressed with the way it hugged the undulations, while other machines performed less well. Apart from its contour hugging ability, he also thought it was very straightforward to use, after having it on trial for a period of time at Lanark.

The trailed top dresser is a Turfco WideSpin 1530 and will be used extensively during the season on a ‘little and often’ basis with light applications on greens, tees and regular lies. Heavier applications will be laid down in the autumn. “It does what you want it to do and is the leader in its class”, said Jim.

Greens Convener Joe Fallano added that to date the club was very happy with the level of service from the Fairways team. “The machines have also performed extremely well”, he said.

More Ransomes Jacobsen equipment for Carluke Golf Club
Additional turf maintenance equipment has been delivered to Carluke Golf Club in Lanarkshire by Fairways GM, Ransomes Jacobsen’s local dealer for the region.

Carluke is a rolling parkland course with views over the Clyde Valley. In recent years course manager Andy Colquhoun has added new greens to a number of holes, enhancing what is already a fine course.

To keep the course in immaculate condition Andy and the Greens Committee drew up a specification which included a new fairway mower and a compact tractor. They then invited the main leading manufacturers to demonstrate their equipment and eventually selected the Ransomes Jacobsen package as their preferred option.

Included in the package was a Jacobsen LF3800 light fairway mower, an Iseki TG5470 compact tractor and an E-Z-GO MPT utility vehicle.

The 11th hole typifies the rolling nature of the course and drops 150 feet to a green surrounded by four bunkers. “The LF3800 is a powerful machine and that’s why it was chosen as the fairway machine”, says Andy, “It has plenty of traction to tackle the undulations around the course. The Iseki tractor meets our needs and with its front loader is a versatile workhorse. We like the MPT as it’s a great runaround; nippy with a good carrying capacity.”

Pumpherston GOLF Club returns for more maintenance equipment
Pumpherston Golf Club at Livingston in West Lothian has returned to local dealer Fairways GM of Kinross for further golf course maintenance equipment. This time they’ve taken an Iseki TG5390 compact tractor and two Jacobsen mowers; an LF 3800 for the fairways and an AR250 to maintain the rough and semi-rough.

Course Manager Stan Cook has used various Iseki tractors for the past 8 years and found them to be reliable workhorses. The LF3800 replaces an existing Ransomes Fairway 405 and the AR250, which has five articulated rotary decks, has been purchased for its excellent finish and ability to follow ground contours.

“We’re always looking to improve the playing facilities for our members and are steadily upgrading our maintenance fleet. We’ve been dealing with Fairways for the past 16 months, in fact since they were appointed as the Ransomes Jacobsen dealer for Scotland, and have been delighted with their service during that period.”

Manicured roughs and fairways FOR centenary celebrations at Williamwood golf club
In order for the course at Williamwood Golf Club on the outskirts of Glasgow to be in prime condition for the centenary year celebrations later this year, course manager Robert Johnston has taken delivery of a Jacobsen AR250 articulated rotary mower, specially designed for maintaining and enhancing semi-roughs.

Previously Robert has been using trailed gangs to maintain these areas on the undulating and testing parkland course, but has purchased the AR250 from his local dealer Fairways GM, to achieve a better quality of finish.

“It’s the same reason why I bought the Jacobsen LF3800 fairway mower last year”, he said. “The quality of cut from these Jacobsen machines is very good. I had the previous incarnation, a Jacobsen 128, for over 10 years and after trialling the LF, I saw no reason to change.

“This being the Club’s centenary we are pulling out all the stops to have the course looking its absolute best this year. We’re also busy upgrading the course and are moving and installing bunkers as part of our renovation programme.”

Robert heads a team of six and has been at the Club for 10 years. He began his career straight from school and spent 11 years at Cochrane Castle Golf Club in Renfrewshire. He then moved to Ardeer Golf Club in Ayrshire as head greenkeeper and after four years moved south to take up a similar position at Newport Golf Club in South Wales. Fours later he returned to his native Scotland to take up his position here at Williamwood.

Immaculate rough at Ratho Park
Tom Murray, head greenkeeper at Ratho Park Golf Club in Midlothian, has recently purchased a Jacobsen HR4600 triple deck rotary mower to maintain the rough and semi-rough at the superb 5932 yard parkland course.

Purchased from local grounds care dealer, Fairways GM, the HR4600 is ideal for maintaining Ratho Park, which is bounded on two sides by the Union Canal and completely encircled by trees. It has a 2.3 metre cutting width, excellent manoeuvrability especially in the wooded environment and prodigious output of up to 3 hectares per hour.

The Club boasts one of the finest clubhouses in the country situated within the magnificent former mansion house which has been transformed following several refurbishments, the latest in 2000 celebrating the Millennium.

Tom Murray joined the greenkeeping team as an apprentice in 1974, just after Tom O’Brien, the renowned course designer left. In 1978 he became an assistant and in the mid-80s was promoted to first assistant. In 1987 he was appointed head greenkeeper, a position he has held for almost 20 years. Tom‘s ability is well recognised and has won awards, both Scottish and British, for his expertise

“Our policy here at Ratho is to cherry pick the best machine for any particular application and in that way we don’t favour any particular manufacturer, but select the best machine for the job. I have five in my team and each one of them gets the opportunity to evaluate each piece of equipment. I prepare a questionnaire in advance of the demonstrations, which each completes and we end up with a points scoring matrix which determines the preferred machine. It’s a team decision and in this case the HR4600 was a clear winner”, he said.

Buggies at Kinross Golf club provide Excellent return on investment
Kinross Golf Club in Fife, owned by the local laird Sir David Montgomery, has recently invested in a fleet of four E-Z-GO golf cars purchased from local Ransomes Jacobsen dealer, Fairways GM Ltd. So successful have they been that a further four have been ordered and are due for delivery in the spring.

The Club has also purchased an E-Z-GO Refresher vehicle to keep their members and visitors refreshed while playing the 36-hole golf complex which lies in beautiful, unspoilt parkland bordering Loch Leven. The two courses, the Bruce and the Montgomery, feature undulating greens, streams, ponds and enticing tree-lined fairways, providing challenging rounds to golfers of all abilities.

John Bashford is the course manager and he has been at the Club for almost 35 years. When he first arrived there was a single 9-hole course set in 30 acres. Today, the two courses encompass 200 acres with all the construction undertaken in-house.

John is responsible for the buggy fleet and says,
“The first four buggies arrived in April at the beginning of last year’s season and have proved very cost-effective. They have not only provided an excellent return on investment; they have obviously proved very popular with the golfers.

“We opted for the electric powered buggies as they feature the latest on-board charging system, which means we can charge them from any 13 amp socket around the facility. This makes them very user-friendly to maintain and being electric there’s very little routine maintenance required.

“We are so pleased with them, that we’ve ordered four more!”

New season, new equipment for Dundee city council
In preparation for the new season the Leisure and Arts Department of Dundee City Council added two new ride-on triple mowers and a trailed gangmower to their grounds maintenance fleet.

The two new ride-on machines are Ransomes Parkways and the trailed gang is a Ransomes TG4650. All have been purchased from local dealer Fairways of Kinross and will be used to maintain cemeteries, sports pitches, public parks, athletic facilities and the esplanades along the beach fronts.

Douglas Barr, Assistant Parks & Outdoor Leisure Manager commented at the handover of the machines,
“We now have four Parkways plus the Ransomes TG4650, which will give us more capacity during the season together with more grass cutting control. This is important because as a department we have recently taken over responsibility for mowing operations within all the public parks, cemeteries and Camperdown Country Park. We have also employed two additional staff to assist in the operations and now have the ability to control the frequency of cutting to help us achieve our Best Value objectives.”
